You’ve got to be kidding me. I am really freaking out now because there’s still alcohol in my system. I mean I get it that people maybe don’t understand why it is a big deal but I’ve been taking breastfeeding very seriously and I will be devastated if I have to give Mason formula.
The alcohol has finally left my system and this whole thing has made me realize that just because I don’t want to be a boring mom doesn’t mean I have to be a crazy mom either. You like my milk just the way it is. There‘s probably a little place right in between that’s just right.

Dr. Sears I am a new mom and I enjoy having a drink every once in a while but I want to make sure I am not harming my baby. How can I know if there is alcohol in my breast milk?
That’s a good question. What I usually say is you can have a drink or two but if you’re feeling a little tipsy then the alcohol gets into your breast milk and you shouldn’t breastfeed at that time because the baby’s gonna get that alcohol.
You don’t want to feed while you’re tipsy. An hour or two, three later when it has been metabolized then it actually passes back out of the breast milk and back into your blood and gets metabolized. So once you’re feeling not tipsy and your good again you don’t need to pump and dump you can just go ahead and breastfeed again. Whether you’re feeling tipsy or not well that may be a little guess work and there’s actually a great test now called Milkscreen. It’s actually a little litmus test. Just dip the test strip into the breast milk and knock off the extra and you just wait. And you can see if you’re done partying with your girlfriends yet or not. It just takes a couple of minutes to read. You compare with the test strip and this shows is positive.
Are mother’s using that if they decide to go out and have a glass of wine. It is great information for mothers that are breastfeeding. So they can go out guilt free for a glass of wine at dinner and enjoy the health benefits and go home. Or get Dad to babysit and go out with your girlfriends. They have a website Milkscreen.com.
